What is Civil Engineering?
Civil engineering plays a significant role in the development of our society via structural design, construction and maintenance of the buildings, roads, railways, airports, bridges, dams, canals and houses etc. The graduates in civil engineering help design, construct and maintain these structures with their analytical abilities acquired after completing the B.Tech in Civil Engineering.
How do we see Civil Engineering at GGI?
The Department of Civil Engineering at GGI was started in the academic year 2009-2010. It offers the 4 years B.Tech program in Civil Engineering through an internationally recognized curriculum prescribed by the affiliating university IKG Punjab Technical University. This program was initially started with an intake of 60 students, which was later increased to 120 from academic year 2011-2012 onwards. The Department is fully equipped with the state-of-the-art laboratories, enabling students to maintain a coherency between the theoretical and practical knowledge. The department conducts regular academic activities under the Insttute-Industrial Interaction Cell (IIIC) of the institute, such as,
- Organizing Visits of students at the on-going major construction sites, dams and the structures of prime importance,
- Organizing Guest lectures from experts of renowned industries, such as Ultratech, JK cement, Ambuja Cement etc.
- Organizing workshops, seminars and hands-on training sessions on latest software tools, such as, AutoCAD, Primevera, STAAD Pro, 3DS Max, ETABS etc.
In addition to above, the department always strive to deliver quality education and content beyond syllabus via its well experiences and dynamic faculty members for the attainment of course (COs) and program outcomes (POs). Thus, all the faculty members continuously update their knowledge by attending FDPs, training sessions, conferences, seminars and STTPs etc. conducted by reputed organizations. The active participation of faculty members in the research activities enables them to maintain a regular interaction with the experts from the industries as well as the academicians. The knowledge acquired by teachers is transferred to students by conducting regular co-curricular activities, wherein students are encouraged to present their research work and projects completed under the mentorship of their teachers. This enables our students to grab a good placement opportunity or to continue their higher education in their selected area of research. Our alumni are occupying good positions in Education, Research, Design and Construction in various private and government organizations and many are working as successful entrepreneurs.
